What to Expect

The Process

Your initial therapy session is considered an assessment process and provides you with an opportunity to discuss the issues you'd like to address, with your PACT Psychology Services counsellor. During the session and together with your therapist, you will identify; your presenting problem(s), any relevant information about your personal history and what you hope to achieve during the course of therapy.

Your PACT therapist will also discuss the process of therapy, the approaches and techniques likely to provide you with relief from your difficulties and the timeframe required to achieve your desired result. If you wish to proceed with further sessions, you will be given a PACT contract to complete and an information sheet to read so that you understand the process in more detail.

Once this information has been collected, therapy sessions are usually conducted on a weekly basis. This should provide you with some immediate relief from your distress. PACT has consistently found that 10 counselling sessions will provide good symptom relief. However, ongoing psychotherapy is invaluable in shifting core issues and achieving long lasting personal growth.

Medicare Benefits

Under the new Medicare regulations you are entitled to receive up to 12 sessions of psychological counselling per year following a referral from your GP. Your GP will begin the process by writing a Mental Health Plan for you. This will include 6 initial sessions that will be reviewed if you require a further 6 sessions. PACT Psychologist's are registered with Medicare and can provide these services to you.
